Norway and Macedonia

Last updated: 21.08.2013 // Diplomatic relations between Norway and Macedonia were established in 1993, and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Skopje was established in 1999. The Embassy in Skopje closed down 30 June 2012, and since 1 July 2012 the Norwegian Embassy in Belgrade has been accredited to Macedonia.

Relations between Norway and Macedonia are good. There is a considerable project cooperation, with an overall development budget that amounts to approx. 25 mill. NOK in 2013. The main aim of the aid is to help furthering Macedonia’s Euro-Atlantic integration, focusing on good governance and anti-corruption activities, defense and security sector reform and conciliation.

Norway supports Macedonia’s aspirations for Euro-Atlantic integration, based on the view that EU and NATO membership is the best way to secure to stability, democracy and economic development in the country.

Macedonian foreign policy is dominated by the country’s name dispute with Greece. Macedonia was close to becoming a NATO member at the time when Albania and Croatia joined the Alliance, but the name dispute is blocking Macedonia’s NATO membership and in practice also its further integration into the EU. Norway’s position is that a solution to the name issue must be found within the framework of bilateral negotiations under the auspices of the UN.

Norway and Macedonia enjoy fruitful defense cooperation, particularly in connection with military medical operations. The Macedonian medical team that has been part of the Norwegian-led ISAF Provincial Reconstruction Team in Faryab Province in Afghanistan since 2009, is one example of mutually beneficial cooperation.

Trade between Norway and Macedonia is limited.
