Norway and Montenegro

Last updated: 26.11.2015 // Norway recognized Montenegro as an independent state 16 June 2006, and diplomatic connections were immediately established. The Embassy in Belgrade handles diplomatic relations with Montenegro. A Norwegian Consulate was established in Podgorica in November 2012. The Consulate in Podgorica is closed until further notice. All consular enquiries must be addressed to the Norwegian Embassy in Belgrade. (11.2015)

The relations between Norway and Montenegro are excellent. Norway has a cooperation program with Montenegro which amounts to approx. 17 mill. NOK in 2013, focusing on further development of rule of law and anti-corruption measures, development of defense institutions, and energy and environment-related issues. Norway aims to support the country’s reform process and integration into Euro-Atlantic structures.

Telenor, which established its operation in Montenegro in 1996, is the largest Norwegian company in Montenegro and was the first major foreign investment in the country.

Norwegian tourism to Montenegro is increasing. During the summer there are direct flights from Norway to the Montenegrin coast, and a number of Norwegians own apartments around the bay of Kotor, particularly in Herceg-Novi.

About 600 Norwegian rheumatism patients are yearly treated at the Simo Milosevic Institute in Igalo, Herceg-Novi, which is a friendship municipality with Levanger.
