After five days Norway and Iceland have two points each while Croatia, after winning the match against Slovenia, has four points after two matches in group D. Slovenia is without points and is meeting with Island today, January 20th, while Norway plays the same day against Croatia. They are playing in the small town of Vrsac, situated in the Pannonian lowland in Vojvodina.

The municipality of Vrsac organized on Tuesday, January 17th, 2012, a reception for the representatives of the participating teams at EHF EURO 2012 who play in Vrsac. Norwegian Ambassador, Nils Ragnar Kamsvåg, together with his Croatian and Slovenian colleagues, a representative of Island's National handball team and officials from the European Handball Federation (EHF) were the guests of honor. The reception was hosted by the President of Vrsac's Municipality, Mr. Cedomir Zivkovic at the Town hall. The organizers were pleased to hear that all national teams were satisfied with the organization of competitions, as well as the hospitality of the citizens of Vrsac.

As part of the program, all three Ambassadors visited their national handball teams and our Norwegian team had the opportunity to share their experiences about EM in Vrsac with Ambassador Kamsvåg, who promised strong support in the continuing matches that are ahead of them. As a token of appreciation for his visit Ambassador got the Norwegian National handball team jersey with signatures of all players.

Vrsac is one of four hosts of the European Handball Championship for Men 2012, being organized in Serbia from 15 to 21 January hosting the teams that play in the Group D: Croatia, Slovenia, Iceland and Norway, and a large number of journalists, fans and sports fans.

Over the years, men’s handball in Norway has been further developed, steadily and step by step, but nevertheless the team of Coach Robert Hedin has not been able to overcome the biggest hurdle – stepping out from the shadow of the Norwegian women’s teams. (See also the article about the Norwegian woman’s handball team winning the World Championship in Brazil in December 2011) http://www.norveska.org.rs/News_and_events/World-Championship-in-Brazil---Norway-World-Champion-2011--/

At the World Championships in Croatia, it was a matter of seconds that led to the national team of Norway missing out on the semi-finals, at the EHF EURO in Austria the team ranked 7th and ranked 9th at the 2011 World Championship in Sweden – a quantum always seemed to be missing barring them from entering the ranks of the world leaders.

But the qualification to the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia, the Norwegians performed strongly, losing only one match against the Czech Republic, and became the dominant group winner.

In Norway much importance is attached to the promotion of young people, for the lack of internationally competitive clubs has led to the individual strongly trained players to move swiftly abroad with priority to Denmark or Germany. An exception to this is the fast left wing Havard Tvedten, who accumulated several years in Spain, where also back court player Christoffer Rambo is now under contract. Playmaker and defense specialist Børge Lund and pivot Bjarte Myrhol play for Rhein-Neckar Löwen. In goal, Ole Erevik is a strong substitute for injured Steinar Ege; moreover Kjetil Strand has been played more forward over the past years.
